Free Summer Meal Program Opens to All Area Children in Bonner County Through August

Multiple Pickup Sites Offer Balanced Nutrition During School Break

The Summer Nutrition Programs for Kids, administered by the Idaho State Department of Education, is providing free meals to children ages 1 through 18 across Bonner County during the school summer recess. The program delivers breakfast and lunch through multiple convenient locations, ensuring that food-insecure children have access to nutritious meals when school cafeterias are closed.

Three pickup locations serve the Sandpoint area: Farmin Stidwell Elementary, City Beach, and Sandpoint High School. Each site operates on different schedules to maximize accessibility. Farmin Elementary distributes meals seven days a week, while City Beach and the high school locations operate Monday through Friday only. All three sites distribute meals between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Each meal package, referred to as a “saddlebag,” contains lunch for the current day and breakfast for the following morning. At Farmin Elementary, Friday distributions include meals for the entire weekend, reducing gaps in nutrition coverage during extended time away from school. Meals rotate on a two-week cycle menu to provide variety and prevent monotony.

Program Open to Any Child in the Area

A key feature of the program is its inclusive eligibility. Bobbie Coleman, the Lake Pend Oreille School District’s child nutrition director, emphasized that participation is not restricted to district students. “They do not have to be Lake Pend Oreille School District students. They can be any student, any child 1 to18 years of age that is in the area or visiting the area,” Coleman said.

This openness reflects the program’s mission to address childhood food insecurity regardless of school enrollment status. Children visiting family members or staying in the area temporarily qualify for the program, broadening its reach across the community.

Farmin Stidwell Elementary, which participates in the program, serves a population where more than half of its students are classified as low-income, making the summer nutrition initiative particularly valuable to families in the school’s attendance area.

Nutritional Standards and Preparation Support

All meals meet U.S. Department of Agriculture requirements designed to support child development and health. These standards mandate inclusion of whole grain items, foods with reduced sugar content, and nutrient-dense options in every meal package. The focus on balanced nutrition reflects a commitment to supporting children’s physical development, academic readiness, and overall well-being during the summer months.

To assist families in meal preparation, each saddlebag includes a colorful instruction sheet with preparation guidelines and cooking suggestions. This support helps parents and caregivers prepare meals that maintain nutritional value while accommodating varying cooking facilities and skill levels.

Dawna May serves as kitchen manager at Farmin Stidwell Elementary, overseeing meal preparation and distribution at that location.

Impact on Child Well-Being

Coleman highlighted the broader significance of the program for child development. “What drives me every day in child nutrition is seeing the direct impact a reliable meal has on children’s well-being,” she said.

The connection between food security and child outcomes extends beyond nutrition. Research consistently demonstrates that access to reliable meals supports academic performance, behavioral health, and social-emotional development. Summer nutrition programs fill a critical gap when school-year meal programs are unavailable, addressing a documented risk period for food-insecure families.

The program operates through the summer school break period, with specific end dates varying by location. Families interested in participating should contact their nearest distribution site or reach out to the Lake Pend Oreille School District’s child nutrition office for enrollment details and location-specific schedules.
