Two Dead After Head-On Crash on U.S. 95 Near Sagle
SAGLE, Idaho — Two Sandpoint men lost their lives Monday afternoon following a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 95 near Sagle that left two others hospitalized and closed the roadway for several hours.
Idaho State Police are investigating the crash, which took place in the 469000 block of U.S. 95. Authorities say an 18-year-old Sandpoint man driving a red 2011 Buick LaCrosse southbound crossed the centerline and collided directly with a white 2021 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup traveling in the opposite direction.
Both the young driver and his passenger — a 48-year-old Sandpoint man — died at the scene. The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 65-year-old Sandpoint resident, and at least one other occupant of the pickup were taken to a local hospital. One victim was transported by ground ambulance and a second by air ambulance.
Authorities confirmed all occupants in both vehicles were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. U.S. 95 was intermittently blocked for roughly three hours as emergency personnel worked the scene.
Idaho State Police have not yet released the identities of those involved, pending notification of next of kin. The investigation remains ongoing.
What Comes Next
Idaho State Police will continue investigating the cause of the crash, including what led the Buick to cross the centerline. With Memorial Day weekend travel at its peak, law enforcement across the state has been stepping up highway patrols — ISP announced increased patrols on several Idaho corridors through the holiday weekend. U.S. 95 through Bonner County is among the region’s most traveled corridors and has been the site of multiple serious crashes in recent years.
