Suspect arrested in Bonner County, Montana vehicle pursuit

Juvenile Driver Arrested in Idaho After Montana Vehicle Pursuit, Facing Multiple Felony Charges

Three Juveniles Detained Following High-Speed Stolen Vehicle Chase in Lincoln County, Montana

BONNER COUNTY, Idaho — A 16-year-old driver is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly stealing a vehicle and leading law enforcement on a dangerous high-speed pursuit through rural northwestern Montana on the night of April 11, 2026, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The juvenile was ultimately transported to the Bonner County Juvenile Detention Center in North Idaho following the incident.

The pursuit began after a 911 caller reported a stolen vehicle in the Yaak, Montana area. Three male juveniles allegedly stole a brown Ford pickup truck and were driving toward Libby, Montana, along Pipe Creek Road. Responding deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office quickly moved to intercept the vehicle.

According to Sheriff Darren Short, the stolen truck was observed driving recklessly — crossing the center line and traveling well above posted speed limits. The juvenile driver failed to yield when deputies attempted a traffic stop, instead continuing to flee through the town of Troy, Montana. At one point during the pursuit, the pickup was recorded traveling at 70 miles per hour in a posted 25 mph zone, representing a speed nearly three times the legal limit.

Boxing Maneuver Used to Stop Fleeing Vehicle

Though Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office officials did not specify the exact location where the chase ended, deputies ultimately brought the stolen vehicle to a stop using a boxing maneuver — a law enforcement tactic in which a police vehicle makes deliberate contact with the suspect’s vehicle, causing it to spin and come to a stop. The technique is typically employed when a fleeing driver poses an immediate danger to public safety.

Following the stop, all three juvenile occupants were detained without further incident. The 16-year-old driver was subsequently transported to the Bonner County Juvenile Detention Center, located across the state line in North Idaho, where juvenile detention services for the region are available.

The juvenile driver faces three felony-level charges: theft of a light vehicle, aggravated fleeing from or eluding a peace officer, and criminal endangerment. The severity of the charges reflects the dangerous conditions created during the pursuit, during which innocent motorists and residents along the route faced significant risk from the recklessly operated stolen vehicle.

Details Limited Due to Juvenile Status of Those Involved

Because all individuals involved in the pursuit and detention are minors, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office noted that details regarding the case are limited by law. The information made publicly available was provided directly by Sheriff Darren Short, and officials indicated that no additional information was expected to be released at the time of publication.

The identities of the juveniles have not been disclosed, consistent with standard protocols for cases involving minors in both Montana and Idaho. The charges facing the 16-year-old driver, however, are felony-level offenses that could carry significant legal consequences depending on how prosecutors and the juvenile court system choose to proceed.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges that law enforcement agencies in rural North Idaho and western Montana face when responding to vehicle theft and high-speed pursuits across sparsely populated areas with limited backup resources. The cooperation between Lincoln County, Montana authorities and Bonner County, Idaho’s juvenile detention system reflects the cross-border coordination that is sometimes necessary in the remote Panhandle region.

What Comes Next

The case involving the 16-year-old driver will now move through the juvenile justice system. Given the felony-level charges of theft, aggravated eluding of law enforcement, and criminal endangerment, prosecutors will determine how to proceed under Montana’s juvenile statutes. The status of the two other detained juveniles had not been publicly disclosed as of publication. Bonner County News will continue to monitor any developments as additional information becomes available from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office or court records.
