Spirit Lake Man Killed in E-Bike Crash on Bonner County’s Highway 41

Interstate highway

A 35-year-old Spirit Lake man died Friday evening after losing control of his electric-assisted bicycle on Highway 41 in Bonner County, according to Idaho State Police.

The crash was reported at approximately 8:37 p.m. on June 26, near milepost 20. The rider was traveling on the right shoulder of the highway when he lost control and was thrown from the bicycle. Fire personnel arrived at the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but the man died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The victim was wearing a motorcycle-style helmet at the time of the collision. His identity has not been publicly released, though next of kin have been notified.

Highway 41 was closed for approximately three hours following the crash while emergency crews worked the scene. Idaho State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the loss of control.

E-Bike Safety Concerns on Rural Idaho Highways

Electric-assisted bicycles have grown increasingly popular across North Idaho in recent years, offering riders a low-cost alternative for commuting and recreation. However, the higher speeds made possible by electric assist — often reaching 20 to 28 miles per hour or more — create additional risks when riders share roadway shoulders with fast-moving vehicle traffic on rural highways like Highway 41.

Highway 41 runs through Bonner County, connecting communities in the region and carrying a mix of local traffic and commercial vehicles. Shoulder conditions and sightlines along rural stretches can vary significantly, and law enforcement agencies across Idaho have noted that e-bike crashes are a growing concern as ridership expands beyond urban areas.

Idaho State Police did not release additional details Friday night regarding vehicle involvement or road conditions at the time of the crash. The investigation remains active.

Community Impact and Road Closure

The roughly three-hour closure of Highway 41 affected evening traffic in the area as first responders secured the scene. Bonner County emergency personnel coordinated the response alongside Idaho State Police.

Bonner County has seen ongoing attention to public safety infrastructure in recent months. County commissioners earlier this year approved a budget carryover exceeding $213,000 for jail security upgrades, reflecting a broader focus on public safety investment across the region.

Friday’s crash serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers present on rural Idaho roadways, particularly for vulnerable road users such as cyclists and e-bike riders sharing shoulders with highway traffic. Safety advocates consistently urge riders to use high-visibility gear, ride predictably, and remain alert to road surface hazards — especially on higher-speed rural routes where vehicle closing speeds leave little margin for error.

What Comes Next

Idaho State Police will continue their investigation into the fatal crash near milepost 20 on Highway 41. No timeline has been given for the release of the victim’s identity or additional investigative findings. Anyone with information relevant to the crash is encouraged to contact Idaho State Police.

The Bonner County community is asked to keep the victim’s family in their thoughts as investigators work to establish a complete picture of what occurred Friday night on Highway 41.
