Family Raises Concerns Over Investigation Details
The family of Jason Leroy Sparks, 50, is disputing the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office account of a fatal shooting that occurred July 19 in Kootenai, alleging that investigators have not fully interviewed child witnesses present at the scene and that the official narrative may not reflect what actually transpired.
Sparks was killed during an altercation with 21-year-old Shawn Webster at a residence where Webster was living with Sparks’ ex-wife, Ashley Sparks. The Bonner County Sheriff’s Office and Prosecutor’s Office released a joint statement on Tuesday, July 23, characterizing the incident as self-defense and stating that Sparks entered the home “uninvited, acting in an aggressive manner” at approximately 6:58 p.m.
Through his brother Kevin Sparks, the family submitted a statement to local media challenging key elements of the sheriff’s account. Kevin Sparks indicated that investigators have not interviewed two of three child witnesses who were present during the shooting, and that at least one child’s recollection of events does not align with details contained in the official press release.
“Our family is deeply concerned that the initial public reporting surrounding Jason’s death has largely reflected one account of what occurred while the investigation is still ongoing,” Kevin Sparks stated in the family’s written response.
Questions About Investigation Scope
The family contends that Sparks was permitted to enter the residence, contradicting the sheriff’s statement that he arrived uninvited. According to the family’s account, Webster and Ashley Sparks were facing eviction from the property due to noise complaints, raising questions about the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
Kevin Sparks expressed concern about the timing and potential bias of the official statement, which was released before the full investigation concluded. “I don’t think it’s fair to him at all. If the investigation comes out that it wasn’t self-defense, are they going to retract [the statement]?” he asked.
The sheriff’s office stated that only Ashley Sparks and Webster have been interviewed so far, according to the family’s concerns. The presence of child witnesses and their differing accounts raises questions about the completeness of the investigative process to date.
Social media activity also figures into the family’s narrative. Ashley Sparks posted on social media approximately one hour and a half before the shooting occurred, a detail the family believes may be relevant to understanding the events that unfolded.
Investigation Ongoing
The Bonner County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged in its statement that the investigation remains active and ongoing. Prosecutors have not yet made a final determination regarding whether the shooting will be deemed justified self-defense or whether charges may be pursued.
Meanwhile, the Sparks family has established a GoFundMe account to raise funds for funeral expenses and legal costs as they seek answers about the circumstances surrounding Jason Sparks’ death.
The case underscores tensions that can arise when law enforcement releases preliminary findings before a full investigation is complete, particularly in cases involving fatalities where family members and witnesses may have conflicting accounts of what occurred. The sheriff’s office has indicated it will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
