Sandpoint Tigers Launch New 60-Plus Baseball League With Season Opener This Weekend

Mountain Home Air Force Base

The Sandpoint Tigers, a newly formed men’s baseball team for players aged 60 and older, will begin their inaugural season this Saturday at War Memorial Field in Sandpoint.

The Tigers are part of the Inland Northwest Men’s Adult and Men’s Senior Baseball leagues, which operate under a national organization comprising more than 40,000 players across the country. The team will compete against regional opponents including the Spokane Dodgers and Spokane Yankees during the season.

The season opener is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, with the Dodgers as the opponent. Admission is free for spectators interested in watching the game.

Growing League in North Idaho

The Inland Northwest Chapter of the league was established in 1996 and has expanded over the years. The chapter originally fielded divisions for players aged 18 and older, followed by a 35-and-over division. The 60-and-over Tigers represent the latest addition to competitive baseball opportunities in the region. League organizers plan to add a fourth team to the roster beginning next year.

The team roster includes both longtime local players and newer residents who have joined the area in recent years.

Opportunity for Competitive Play

Tigers manager Toby Frye emphasized the league’s purpose, noting that it “provides aging baseball players the opportunity to continue playing a competitive sport.” The formation of the 60-and-over division reflects growing interest among older athletes in maintaining active recreational involvement in their communities.

The War Memorial Field location has hosted various community sporting events and remains a central venue for Sandpoint recreational activities. The free admission policy aims to build local community support and interest in the team as it launches its first season.
