A Sandpoint resident has called for voters to support three candidates in the race for Idaho’s Legislative District 1, citing affordability and workforce challenges that are reshaping the region.
In a letter published August 11, A. Berliner raised concerns about the cost of living in the area, noting that housing expenses have outpaced local wages. “It is becoming impossible for young people to live here,” Berliner wrote, pointing to insufficient job incomes relative to rent and mortgage costs, as first reported by the Bonner County Daily Bee.
Berliner highlighted what he characterized as broader community losses—including departures of medical professionals, deteriorating road conditions, and reduced law enforcement staffing. The resident warned that children are leaving the area in response to these conditions.
Berliner named three current officeholders—Herndon, Rasor, and Jane Sauter—as targets for replacement, characterizing their voting patterns as opposing tax measures that fund basic services. The resident identified funding from the Freedom Foundation as a common source among those three candidates.
In endorsing replacements, Berliner backed Kathryn Larsen, Karen Mathee, and Steve Johnson, describing them as candidates with “skills and heart to lead without self interest and out-of-state money.” The endorsement reflects broader voter concerns about local representation and fiscal priorities in the legislative district, as first reported by the Bonner County Daily Bee.
