Sandpoint Area Mourns James Ray Smith, Marine Veteran and Pack River Jim, at 66

James Ray Smith, a retired U.S. Marine and beloved member of the North Idaho community known to friends as “Pack River Jim,” passed away June 27, 2026, at the age of 66. The cause of death was COPD.

Smith dedicated 23 years to the Marine Corps before retiring honorably, a career of service that defined much of his life. After his military years, he became a familiar face in the region as a member of the Hermanos motorcycle club, where his nickname reflected deep roots along the Pack River corridor of Bonner County.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Inez; father, Dave; brother, Brian; and daughter, Julie. Smith is survived by his wife, Brenda; sons Kajun and Tanner; daughters Shanda, Jennifer, and Crystal; granddaughter Astrid; sister Mary Mendora; brothers Mark Huppell and Jerry; and a close circle of friends including Tony and others who shared his passion for the open road.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Coffelt Funeral Service. Families and friends wishing to share memories may do so through the online guest book at coffeltservice.com.

Smith’s passing leaves a gap in the community he served both in uniform and among fellow riders, neighbors, and family across the Sandpoint area.
