The annual Sand Creek Regatta is just over a week away, and organizers are making a final call for participants willing to construct their own watercraft and compete on Sand Creek in Sandpoint, Idaho. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, according to sandpointreader.com.
The regatta’s defining rule is simple: boats must be built from scrap materials and miscellaneous supplies. No repurposing of already-floating vessels like canoes is allowed, and every boat must be powered entirely by human effort — no sails, no motors. At least one adult aged 18 or older must be aboard each entry.
Competitors will paddle their homemade crafts from the Bridge Street Bridge to the Cedar Street Bridge and back, putting both their construction skills and paddling endurance to the test.
Sacrifice a Tourist
Returning this year is a fan-favorite pre-race tradition known as “Sacrifice a Tourist,” which takes place before the starting gun. One lucky — or unlucky — visitor is selected to participate in the ceremony and receives a free T-shirt along with a gift certificate for dinner and drinks at Eichardt’s Pub as a reward for their good sport.
