North Idaho Native’s Hands-Free Shoe Company Reaches $100 Million Valuation

Downtown Boise, Idaho

A North Idaho connection to one of the footwear industry’s fastest-growing innovations has put the region on the map in consumer technology and entrepreneurship. Kizik, a hands-free shoe brand created by HandsFree Labs, achieved a $100 million valuation in just five years—a milestone that drew founder and chairman Mike Pratt to Coeur d’Alene this month to reconnect with local investors and co-founder Pat Hogan, a longtime Panhandle resident.

The company’s breakthrough product solves a simple but widespread problem: putting on shoes without using your hands. The innovation has captured attention from major players in the athletic and workwear sectors, with Nike serving as an early investor and first major licensee of HandsFree Labs’ technology.

Rapid Growth and Market Potential

Pratt, who is based in Salt Lake City, began patenting ideas at age 19. HandsFree Labs now holds more than 250 granted and pending patents across more than a dozen countries, positioning the company as a serious player in footwear innovation. The global footwear market is valued at approximately $500 billion annually. If hands-free footwear captures just 10 percent of that market, the category alone could generate more than $50 billion in annual revenue.

Pratt expressed confidence in the category’s trajectory during his visit. “I believe hands-free footwear is irreversible. The question isn’t whether it grows. The question is how big it gets and how fast,” he said, reflecting on the market potential for the innovation his company pioneered.

The company is expanding beyond casual consumer shoes. Blue Ox, HandsFree Labs’ first hands-free work boot brand designed for industrial and outdoor professionals, is scheduled to launch this fall. The move signals ambitions to penetrate the rugged workwear market, where hands-free convenience could appeal to construction workers, landscapers, and other trades requiring quick footwear changes.

Local Roots and Regional Investment

Hogan, Kizik’s co-founder, is a retired North Idaho native who played a central role in launching the company alongside Pratt. His deep ties to the region helped attract local capital to the venture during its early growth phase. The visit underscored the importance of maintaining those connections even as HandsFree Labs has scaled nationally and internationally.

Beyond the shoe business, Hogan has channeled his entrepreneurial experience into community development. In 2024, he co-founded the Young Family Foundation (YFF) alongside co-founder Corina Larabee. The foundation provides down payment assistance and grants to help North Idaho families achieve homeownership—addressing one of the region’s most pressing affordability challenges. YFF maintains an office in downtown Coeur d’Alene.

Pratt articulated the broader philosophy behind HandsFree Labs’ work, emphasizing practical innovation over novelty. “We’re trying to make footwear work better. Every once in a while a product comes along that is simply a better way,” he said. That mindset has translated into measurable success, with Kizik establishing itself as a consumer brand that appeals to busy professionals, athletes, and workers seeking convenience without sacrificing functionality.

What Comes Next

The fall launch of Blue Ox will mark HandsFree Labs’ entry into a new market segment and test whether the hands-free innovation resonates beyond casual footwear. Meanwhile, Hogan’s work through the Young Family Foundation addresses housing accessibility for the region’s workforce—a complementary focus that reflects how North Idaho entrepreneurs are thinking beyond their core businesses to strengthen local communities.

As the hands-free footwear category matures, attention will focus on whether Blue Ox can replicate Kizik’s consumer success in the more conservative workwear market, and whether the broader category can sustain its momentum as competitors enter the space. For now, Kizik’s achievement stands as a testament to what North Idaho-connected entrepreneurs can accomplish when combining innovation with patient capital and community support.
