Idaho’s Liberty Bell Replica Returns to Capitol After Restoration Work Completed

Idaho State Capitol rotunda

Idaho’s Liberty Bell replica has completed restoration and returned to the Idaho State Capitol in Boise following months of specialized work on the historic symbol of American independence.

The America250 in Idaho Advisory Council authorized spending up to $28,500 for the restoration project in December. The bell was sent to Bell Foundry Cristoph in Charleston, South Carolina, in January, where craftspeople addressed structural issues and wear accumulated over decades. The restoration included fabrication of a new yoke housing matching the bell’s original 1950s design, installation of new steel brackets, application of protective cladding, and repair of bolts and hardware.

The restored bell made a ceremonial journey through downtown Boise before arriving at the Capitol steps on Saturday, marking the completion of a project that aims to reconnect Idahoans with the nation’s founding principles as the country marks its 250th anniversary.

County-by-County Tour Planned for Fall

State officials announced plans for the Liberty Bell to tour all 44 Idaho counties beginning in mid-August. At each stop, visitors will have the opportunity to ring the bell, and organizers expect to encourage students and families to participate in the tour.

The restoration and tour initiative originated with Sue Gaston, a Nampa resident and America250 in Idaho ambassador, who saw the project as a way to engage Idaho communities in celebrating the nation’s anniversary. A fundraiser held in May encouraged Idaho children to donate quarters to help offset tour costs.

Idaho received its Liberty Bell replica during the 1950s as part of a nationwide program to mark American heritage. The replica has stood at the Capitol since that time, though years of exposure and use had taken their toll on the bell and its mounting hardware.

Tour details are expected to be announced by the end of July. Following completion of the county tour, the Liberty Bell will return to its home on the Idaho State Capitol steps.

Celebrating Idaho’s Civic Connection

Idaho State Treasurer Julie Ellsworth, who has helped oversee the project, reflected on the bell’s significance. “It’s just been delightful. The best part was seeing the faces of people every time we would ring it,” Ellsworth said, pointing to the emotional connection many Idahoans feel to the symbol of independence and freedom.

The restoration effort represents a broader statewide initiative to mark America250, the national commemoration of the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary. The restored bell is expected to serve as a focal point for communities across Idaho to reflect on American values and heritage as the year-long celebration continues.

More information on tour dates and locations will be released in the coming weeks. Idahoans interested in the bell’s journey across the state can watch for announcements from the America250 in Idaho Advisory Council.
