Record Spring Demand Strains Southern Idaho Water Supply
Idaho is facing an unprecedented water crisis this season, with spring water demand in southern Idaho reaching nearly 140 percent of the historical average—the highest number on record for the state, according to calculations from the Idaho Department of Water Resources.
The strain is forcing severe cutbacks across the agricultural sector. Members of the Surface Water Coalition, which delivers water to roughly 550,000 acres of Idaho farmland, are nearly all experiencing significant water reductions. The Minidoka Irrigation District has imposed a 15 percent cut for its users, while some coalition members are facing reductions as high as 33 percent of their daily water allocation.

Even with mitigation water from junior groundwater users projected at around 80,000 acre-feet, a substantial gap remains between the water that farmers are constitutionally owed and what is actually available.

This spring’s precipitation fell to a fraction of normal levels, while temperatures consistently ran well above average. Forecasters are pointing to a strengthening El Niño pattern expected this winter, which could continue to complicate the region’s water outlook.
