As of mid-August, water testing identified eight quagga mussel larvae and seven adult specimens. After quagga mussels were first identified as larvae in September 2023, state agencies conducted extensive treatments that covered larger sections of the river. The infested portion of the Snake River has shrunk since the initial detection in 2023, allowing for a more concentrated response. The treatment plan involves applying two different chemical agents: Earthtec QZ, a copper-sulfate based solution, and Natrix. These chemicals are designed to kill the mussels but also pose risks to native aquatic life.
In the Twin Falls pool, officials plan to deploy 16,855 gallons of Earthtec QZ and 9,346 gallons of Natrix. Downriver in the Shoshone Falls pool, the dosage will be slightly higher, with 20,338 gallons of Earthtec QZ and 11,290 gallons of Natrix scheduled for application. The operation is expected to conclude by September 13.

More than 1,700 different users rely on Snake River water, including municipal drinking water systems serving communities across southern Idaho.
