Idaho Gas Prices Ease as Hundreds of Thousands Prepare for Fourth of July Travel

Downtown Boise, Idaho

Fuel Costs Drop Ahead of Holiday Weekend Surge

Idaho drivers are catching a break at the pump as a record number of Americans hit the roads for the Fourth of July holiday. The state’s average regular gasoline price stood at $4.11 per gallon on Monday, down 13 cents from the previous week and notably lower than the peak of $4.70 reached in late April.

The decline reflects broader national trends, with the U.S. average sitting at $3.86 per gallon—placing Idaho among the pricier fuel markets. The state currently ranks 10th highest in the nation for gas costs, though relief has come steadily over recent weeks. Compared to a month earlier, Idaho prices have dropped 54 cents per gallon, and they sit 69 cents above year-ago levels.

Matthew Conde, public affairs director for AAA Idaho, noted the improvement from the spring spike: “What Idaho drivers are paying is a far cry from the recent peak of $4.70 back in late April.” The moderation reflects changing market conditions, with crude oil trading near $71 per barrel—down $3 from the previous week and $16 lower than early June.

Broad Relief Across U.S. Markets

The fuel price decline is not confined to Idaho. Forty-seven of fifty states saw pump prices fall during the week, with the national average dropping 7 cents. Oil futures have cooled significantly from their April high of $107 per barrel, a $37 swing downward that has translated into savings across regional markets.

Conde attributed the stabilization partly to geopolitical factors. “Crude oil prices have come down as the market shows guarded optimism about tensions in the Middle East,” he said. While crude remains $6 higher than July 2025 levels, the recent downward momentum offers temporary relief to motorists.

Record Holiday Travel Expected

An estimated 72.2 million Americans are expected to travel during the Fourth of July weekend, with approximately 426,000 Idahoans joining the holiday surge. AAA identified Thursday and Sunday as the peak traffic days, when congestion on major routes—including seasonal travel corridors tied to North Idaho tourism—is likely to intensify.

Lower fuel costs may provide modest financial relief for families undertaking road trips, though prices remain elevated compared to historical norms. The holiday weekend coincides with the warmest summer travel season, traditionally one of the busiest periods for motorists across the Northwest.

For those planning holiday travel within Idaho or to neighboring states, the timing offers some cost advantage. However, drivers should remain mindful that fuel remains a significant budget item, particularly for longer excursions or families traveling in larger vehicles.

What Comes Next

Gas prices will likely continue responding to crude oil market movements and geopolitical developments. AAA monitors weekly price trends as travel patterns shift through the summer season. Motorists are encouraged to check current fuel prices before departing and to maintain vehicle maintenance ahead of extended holiday trips to maximize fuel efficiency and safety on regional highways.
