Idaho Free Fishing Day Set for June 13 as Hatcheries Stock Nearly a Quarter-Million Trout

Anglers across Idaho — and newcomers who have never held a rod — can hit the water without a license this coming Saturday, June 13, 2026, as the state observes its annual Free Fishing Day. Designated for the second Saturday of June each year, the event removes the license requirement for a full day while all other regulations remain firmly in place.

Stocked Waters and Loaner Gear Lower the Barrier to Entry

Idaho Fish and Game made significant preparations in the weeks leading up to the event. Hatchery Manager Bryan Grant noted that the agency stocked roughly 243,000 catchable rainbow trout across the state in the month prior to Free Fishing Day — giving both veteran and first-time anglers strong odds of landing a catch.

For those who don’t own equipment, several locations are participating in a loaner gear program at no cost. Farragut State Park, Priest Lake, and Round Lake are among the sites where visitors can borrow poles and other tackle to get on the water. The program is designed to make the day accessible to families and beginners who might not be ready to invest in gear of their own. Priest Lake is a natural draw for North Idaho residents looking to take advantage — and for those planning a longer outdoor outing in the region, Schweitzer Mountain Resort also offers year-round recreation options worth exploring.

Anglers should be aware, however, that the license waiver does not suspend the rulebook. Creel limits, season opening dates, and tackle restrictions — including any barbless hook requirements — remain enforceable throughout the day.

Kids’ Derby in Rathdrum Kicks Off the Morning

One of the more family-focused events tied to Free Fishing Day is the annual kids’ fishing derby in Rathdrum, running from 9 to 11 a.m. The derby is free and open to children 14 years old and younger. Organizers ask participants to come prepared with their own poles, worms, and barbless hooks.

The Rathdrum event is part of a broader slate of activities scheduled at various locations throughout Idaho to encourage participation — particularly among younger residents who may be experiencing fishing for the first time.

What Comes Next

Free Fishing Day runs for a single day — Saturday, June 13, 2026 — after which standard Idaho fishing license requirements resume. Anyone interested in continuing to fish beyond that date will need to obtain the appropriate license through Idaho Fish and Game. Residents planning to fish Bonner County waters this season should also note that the Hawkins Point Boat Launch has been temporarily closed for site improvements, which may affect access to some local fishing spots. For more details on loaner gear availability or nearby event schedules, contacting the closest Fish and Game regional office is recommended before heading out.
