Free water safety day at Litehouse YMCA

SANDPOINT, Idaho — The Litehouse YMCA held its first free water safety event Friday afternoon, offering Bonner County families hands-on resources and education in recognition of National Water Safety Month.

The event ran from 1 to 4 p.m. and was open to attendees of all ages. Activities included swim lesson evaluations, life jacket fittings, water safety demonstrations, and basic CPR and first aid instruction.

Aquatics Director Kayla Ireland said the goal is straightforward: keep community members safe around water. “Education and water competency are truly lifesaving skills,” Ireland said, adding that the event aims to raise awareness and connect families with helpful resources.

The event was organized in partnership with Bonner County paramedics, the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, and Selkirk Fire Rescue & EMS — giving attendees a direct connection to local first responders alongside the safety programming.

“This event provides a valuable opportunity for community members to connect with local first responders and take an important step toward preventing water-related accidents,” Ireland said.

With Lake Pend Oreille and surrounding waterways drawing swimmers, boaters, and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the summer months, water safety awareness is especially relevant for North Idaho residents heading into the warmer season.

What Comes Next

The Litehouse YMCA has not announced whether the free water safety event will become an annual offering, but organizers indicated their commitment to ongoing water competency education in the community. Families interested in swim lesson evaluations or life jacket resources can contact the Litehouse YMCA directly for future programming information. Bonner County residents can also stay connected with local community events — including this summer’s 39th annual Lost in the 50s celebration in Sandpoint — as the busy season gets underway.
