Two Sandpoint Men Killed in Head-On Crash on Highway 95 Near Sagle
SAGLE, Idaho — Two men from Sandpoint lost their lives Sunday afternoon after a vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic on US Highway 95 in Bonner County, triggering a head-on collision that left two others hospitalized.
Idaho State Police investigators say the crash happened around 1:25 p.m. on May 25 near milepost 469, south of Sagle. An 18-year-old Sandpoint man driving a red 2011 Buick LaCrosse southbound on US-95 veered left of center and struck a white 2021 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup traveling northbound.
The teenage driver and his passenger — a 48-year-old Sandpoint man — both died at the scene. Both men in the Dodge Ram survived but were taken to a local hospital, one by ground ambulance and one by air transport.
Authorities confirmed all four occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. The highway was intermittently closed for roughly three hours as investigators worked the scene.
Next of kin had not yet been notified as of the release of preliminary information. The crash remains under active investigation by Idaho State Police District 1, which covers Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai, Benewah, and Shoshone counties.
Highway Safety Concerns in Bonner County
The fatal crash is the latest in a series of serious traffic incidents along North Idaho’s major corridors. A fatal crash on Highway 200 near Clark Fork is also currently under investigation by state police. Head-on collisions on two-lane rural highways remain among the deadliest crash types, particularly on stretches of US-95 that carry heavy traffic between Sandpoint and the Boise area.
