Deadly Collision at Milepost 483.3

A 66-year-old woman lost her life Sunday after a chain-reaction, four-vehicle wreck shut down a stretch of US Highway 95 near Sandpoint in Bonner County. The crash took place at milepost 483.3 at roughly 11:21 a.m. on July 21st, and the investigation remains active.

Authorities reconstructed the sequence of events as beginning with a passing attempt that went wrong. A 40-year-old man from Ponderay was heading north in a red Honda Fit when he moved to the shoulder to give a grey Toyota Tacoma room to get by. The Toyota, piloted by a 26-year-old Sandpoint resident, clipped the Honda during the maneuver. That contact sent the Tacoma veering across the center line and directly into the path of oncoming southbound vehicles.

Head-On Impact and Secondary Collision

The Toyota met a white GMC Sierra in a head-on impact. The Sierra was traveling southbound, driven by the 66-year-old woman who would not survive the crash. Almost simultaneously, a blue Subaru Forester — driven by a 52-year-old woman also heading south — slammed into the rear of the GMC, adding a second major impact to an already catastrophic scene.

Investigators pointed to seatbelt use as a notable factor in the outcome. The drivers of the Honda, the Toyota, and the Subaru were all wearing their seatbelts at the time of impact. The GMC driver was not restrained. Authorities have stated that neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have contributed to the crash, though the full investigation is still underway.

A Dangerous Corridor Through North Idaho

US-95 serves as the primary north-south artery through Bonner County, carrying heavy traffic between Sandpoint, Ponderay, and communities stretching north toward the Canadian border and south into the Treasure Valley. The highway’s two-lane sections carry a persistent risk, and passing maneuvers along those stretches have been a factor in previous serious crashes in the region.

No names have been publicly released in connection with Sunday’s collision. Residents with any information that may assist investigators are encouraged to reach out to the Idaho State Police, which is leading the inquiry, or the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office.

What Comes Next

The investigation into the July 21st crash on US-95 is ongoing, and officials have not yet indicated whether any citations or charges will result from the findings. As the Idaho State Police continue to reconstruct the precise chain of events, additional details regarding the victims and contributing circumstances may be released. Bonner County residents are reminded that seatbelt use remains one of the most consistently documented factors in crash survival outcomes. Updates will be reported as authorities release further information.
