A rapidly spreading wildfire in the Turner Hill area north of Bonners Ferry forced evacuations Wednesday evening as strong winds drove active fire behavior across the region.
The fire, estimated at 75 to 100 acres, ignited in the area approximately 8 miles north of Bonners Ferry. A 20-person crew arrived shortly after 11 p.m. to combat the blaze, with one Idaho Department of Lands fire engine already positioned on scene. Three additional Department of Lands engines were en route to support suppression efforts.
High winds with gusts reaching 40 miles per hour accelerated fire spread and complicated firefighting operations. The Idaho Department of Lands and North Bench Fire District established Unified Command to coordinate the response.
Evacuation Orders
The Boundary County Sheriff’s office issued a “Go” evacuation status for residents in the 3000 block of Turner Hill Road extending east to Highway 95, as well as Holmes Road, Fleming Creek Road, Kings Row, Fawn Lane, and associated side roads. The Boundary County Fairgrounds was designated as an evacuation center for displaced residents.
This fire is among several recent wildfire incidents across North Idaho that have stretched firefighting resources during peak fire season. Residents in evacuation zones were urged to gather essential documents and supplies and proceed to the fairgrounds or other safe locations.
What Comes Next
Firefighting crews will continue working to contain and control the blaze as wind conditions and overnight temperatures affect fire behavior. Residents should monitor local emergency services updates for evacuation status changes and be prepared for potential evacuation order extensions if fire conditions warrant.
