Farm Bureau, local media to host state and local candidate forums

Idaho Farm Bureau, Local Media Organizations to Host Candidate Forums for Bonner County Legislative Districts Ahead of May Primary

Bonner County Voters to Hear from State and Local Candidates in Multiple Forums

Sandpoint, Idaho — Voters in Idaho Legislative Districts 1 and 2 will have several opportunities to meet and evaluate candidates for state and local office before the Tuesday, May 19 primary election, with a series of candidate forums scheduled through late April and early May. The Bonner County Farm Bureau and a coalition of local media organizations have organized the events, offering residents a direct look at the individuals competing for seats that will shape governance across North Idaho.

The Bonner County Farm Bureau will launch the forum series on Friday, April 24 at 6 p.m. at the Blanchard Community Center, located at 685 Rusho Lane. That event will feature House and Senate candidates from all parties in both District 1 and District 2. The Farm Bureau will then host a second forum focused exclusively on District 1 candidates on Wednesday, April 29 at 6 p.m. at the Clark Fork Community Center, 1001 N. Cedar St.

Rounding out the Farm Bureau’s forum schedule, a third event on Thursday, April 30 at 6 p.m. — also at the Clark Fork Community Center — will bring together candidates for Bonner County commissioner, clerk, assessor, district judge, and coroner. County-level offices often receive less public attention than higher-profile legislative races, making forums like this a valuable resource for voters evaluating candidates for positions that directly affect day-to-day county services. Issues such as county infrastructure and administrative services are among the matters these elected officials will oversee.

Local Media Coalition to Present Forums at Sandpoint High School

Following the Farm Bureau events, a coalition of local media and community organizations will present two additional forums at the Sandpoint High School auditorium, located at 410 S. Division Ave. The participating organizations include 88.5 KRFY Panhandle Community Radio, the Bonner County Daily Bee, the Sandpoint Reader, SandpointOnline.com, and the Selkirk Association of Realtors.

Both forums are scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The first, on Monday, May 4, will be hosted by the Bonner County Daily Bee and will feature District 1 legislative candidates. The second forum, on Tuesday, May 5, will be moderated by Sandpoint Reader Publisher Ben Olson and will focus on candidates for contested county offices.

Both events will be broadcast live and streamed by 88.5 KRFY, giving Bonner County residents who cannot attend in person the ability to follow the forums in real time. Both the Daily Bee and the Sandpoint Reader are expected to publish coverage of the forums following the events.

Voters looking to prepare in advance can look for completed candidate questionnaires covering contested District 1 legislative and Bonner County positions, scheduled to appear in the Thursday, April 30 edition of the Sandpoint Reader.

High-Stakes Primary Brings Competitive Races to Bonner County

The May 19 primary comes at a time when Bonner County and the broader North Idaho Panhandle region are navigating a range of policy and governance questions at both the state and local level. Races for county commissioner, assessor, and other local offices carry significant implications for property owners, taxpayers, and families throughout the region. At the state legislative level, Idaho lawmakers have addressed a wide spectrum of issues this session, from healthcare funding decisions to local regulatory questions that have drawn attention across the state.

Participation in candidate forums has historically provided voters with a clearer picture of where candidates stand on the issues most relevant to their communities. With multiple events spread across different locations in Bonner County — from Blanchard to Clark Fork to Sandpoint — organizers appear committed to reaching voters across the district’s geographic expanse.

What Comes Next

The full forum schedule runs from April 24 through May 5, giving voters nearly two weeks of opportunities to engage with candidates before the May 19 primary. Residents are encouraged to attend in person or tune in to 88.5 KRFY for live broadcasts of the Sandpoint High School forums. The Sandpoint Reader’s April 30 edition will include candidate questionnaires for those who want to review positions ahead of the events.
