Elk Resident Arrested After Alleged Arson Attempt on Allen Road in Pend Oreille County

Interstate highway

A 53-year-old Elk, Washington man was arrested last Saturday following an alleged arson attempt on Allen Road in Pend Oreille County, authorities said.

Ronald A. Riek Jr. was booked into Pend Oreille County Jail after a concerned citizen reported a possible grass fire to 911. When deputies from the Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office responded, they found Riek’s vehicle crashed into a ditch near the reported fire location.

Authorities allege Riek attempted to start a fire on Allen Road while driving under the influence, then fled the scene. He lost control of his vehicle during the escape and crashed, according to the investigation.

Riek was charged with driving under the influence, reckless endangerment, outdoor burning, and arson in the second degree. He was released from custody on August 3. The investigation remained ongoing at the time the arrest was disclosed.

Sheriff Glenn Blakeslee commended the public’s role in the case, stating: “I would like to thank the citizens who reported the incident and aided in the apprehension of Mr. Riek.”, as first reported by the Bonner County Daily Bee

The arrest comes as Avista prepares for potential safety power shutoffs in Bonner County amid high fire risk, and as the region continues to manage wildfire threats during fire season. Earlier this summer, the Upper Smith Fire near Bonners Ferry reached 40% containment after a month of intensive operations.
