A 75-year-old Clark Fork woman was killed Tuesday afternoon after her vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic on State Highway 200 near Hope, Idaho, striking a semi-truck in a head-on collision, according to the Idaho State Police.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. Investigators say the woman was traveling eastbound when her vehicle drifted left of the center line and collided with the westbound semi. She died as a result of her injuries.
Highway Closed for More Than Six Hours
The collision prompted an extended closure of Highway 200, which remained blocked for over six hours as emergency personnel and investigators worked the scene. The stretch of roadway along the southern shore of Lake Pend Oreille is a primary corridor connecting Sandpoint and Clark Fork, and lengthy closures on the route can significantly impact travel throughout the region.
Idaho State Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the crash. No additional details about the semi-truck driver or other involved parties were available at the time of this report.
What Comes Next
The Idaho State Police investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet released a final determination on contributing factors. Highway 200 has since reopened to traffic.
The fatality is a reminder of the safety challenges facing rural highway corridors in Bonner County. Local infrastructure concerns have drawn attention in recent months, including ongoing discussions about aging road and bridge infrastructure across the region. The Idaho Transportation Department has announced plans to replace the aging US-2 bridge in Priest River with a modern structure, reflecting broader efforts to address deteriorating infrastructure along North Idaho’s key travel routes.
