Swift Response Brings Coeur d’Alene Man to Safety After Capsizing

A 29-year-old Coeur d’Alene man owes his life to a borrowed life jacket after his kayak capsized in rough conditions on Lake Pend Oreille on August 13, forcing a coordinated rescue by Bonner County authorities.

The man was kayaking south of Hope when he encountered deteriorating weather conditions. Large waves reaching four to five feet in height, combined with wind gusts exceeding 35 miles per hour, capsized his vessel at approximately 3:09 p.m. The borrowed life jacket, obtained from an Idaho Parks and Recreation loaner station at Hope Boat Basin, kept him afloat as he waited for help.

Rescue Teams Locate Kayaker Two Miles from Shore

When the man called for assistance, rescuers from the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office and Sam Owen Fire Department mobilized quickly. Search and rescue personnel located him approximately two miles from the closest shoreline, positioning him a quarter mile from his last known GPS location when they found him.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office pulled the man aboard their vessel and evaluated his condition on the water. Despite the harrowing experience and extended time in the lake, he was found to be in good health and did not require medical treatment. His kayak was recovered, and he was returned safely to shore.

Loaner Program Credited with Lifesaving Outcome

The rescue highlighted the importance of life jacket availability at public boat launch facilities across the region. The Idaho Parks and Recreation loaner program at Hope Boat Basin provides flotation devices to recreational users who may not own their own equipment—a provision that directly contributed to this man’s survival.

Lake Pend Oreille, the largest lake in Idaho, is known for rapid weather changes and challenging water conditions, particularly during late summer when thermal dynamics can produce sudden wind and wave activity. The August 13 incident underscores the unpredictable nature of water recreation in the Panhandle and the importance of preparedness for boaters and kayakers.

Officials have not released additional details regarding the circumstances that led the kayaker to venture onto the lake during what proved to be dangerous conditions, nor have they indicated whether weather forecasts had warned of the high winds that ultimately contributed to the capsizing.

What Comes Next: The Bonner County Sheriff’s Office and Sam Owen Fire Department continue to encourage all water recreation participants to wear properly fitted life jackets at all times while on the water. Those planning to kayak or boat on Lake Pend Oreille are advised to check weather forecasts before launching and to familiarize themselves with the nearest emergency communication options and boat launch facilities equipped with loaner life jacket programs.
