A cherished community artifact will be unveiled to the public for the first time in decades when the Bonner County Historical Society and East Bonner County Library host a History Exchange presentation on July 16.
The bicentennial quilt, created in 1976 to mark America’s 200th anniversary, features panels designed by local artists and quilting groups that capture distinctive places and cultural elements of the county. Hannah Combs, executive director of the Bonner County Historical Society and Museum, noted that the quilt represents “some of the places and culture that make Bonner County unique.”
The evening will begin with a social hour at 4:30 p.m. at the East Bonner County Library, 1407 Cedar Street in Sandpoint. Susan Moon will share remembrances of the quilt’s creation and significance from 5:15 to 6 p.m.
Following the presentation, the quilt will be permanently installed in the library’s new addition, ensuring future generations can appreciate this snapshot of local history. The timing of the display coincides with the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.
The community is invited to attend the History Exchange event and reconnect with the region’s heritage. For those interested in local history and cultural preservation, the presentation offers an opportunity to learn the stories behind the quilt’s individual panels and the local artisans who created them.
Additional community history events and local celebrations continue to strengthen Bonner County’s connection to its past.
