Detention Deputy Debra Baker concluded her tenure with the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office after more than 20 years, receiving a formal retirement recognition that included presentation of her service handgun, badge, and retired identification card.
Sheriff Daryl Wheeler presided over the ceremonial awards, which are reserved for departing officers and deputies who meet the agency’s 20-year minimum service threshold. According to Wheeler, the presentation carries symbolic weight beyond the physical items. “The ceremony recognizes that burden and the trust placed in them. This ceremony honors service and career identity,” Wheeler told the Bonner County Daily Bee.
The sheriff emphasized the significance of the items themselves. “Firearms and badges are not just items; they represent the duty to protect, enforce the law, and act under strict standards,” Wheeler said.
Baker’s retirement marks the end of a career spent primarily in detention operations at the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, which oversees law enforcement across the county’s unincorporated areas and provides contracted services to municipalities including Sandpoint and Ponderay.
