Bonner County Historical Society Revives Pioneer Picnic at Lakeview Park

Sawtooth Valley, Idaho

The Bonner County Historical Society and Museum will host its second annual Pioneer Picnic on Sunday, July 19, from noon to 4 p.m. at Lakeview Park in Sandpoint. The event draws inspiration from community gatherings that were common fixtures in the 1920s, blending recreation with local heritage.

The picnic’s return reflects the success of last year’s inaugural event. Hannah Combs, executive director of the Bonner County Historical Society, explained the concept behind the gathering: “Community picnics were traditional in the 1920s, and we’re going back to that era with a fun-filled afternoon.”

What to Expect

Activities planned for the afternoon include old-fashioned carnival games, a dunk tank featuring local celebrities, sack races, live music, a bake walk, and a community tug-of-war competition. The museum will remain open throughout the event for visitors interested in exploring exhibits.

Attendees can bring picnic lunches from home, or purchase refreshments on-site. Raffle tickets will be sold for a Festival at Sandpoint-themed basket prize.

Combs emphasized the inclusive nature of the event: “All are welcome. Bring your friends and family. There will be old-fashioned carnival games, a dunk tank, sack races, music, a bake walk, community and history.”

Membership Opportunities

The Bonner County Historical Society will offer memberships for purchase during the event. Current members receive a special discount, with half the membership value applied toward event ticket purchases.

The Pioneer Picnic represents one of several community-focused events taking place in Bonner County this summer. Other upcoming gatherings include Ponderay’s Tenth Annual Neighbor Day Celebration, which invites vendors and sponsors to participate in the community festivities.

Lakeview Park, located in downtown Sandpoint, provides a scenic setting along Lake Pend Oreille for the outdoor gathering. The venue has hosted numerous community events and serves as a central gathering space for North Idaho residents.

What Comes Next: The Pioneer Picnic runs July 19 from noon to 4 p.m. at Lakeview Park. Admission details and specific raffle prize information are available through the Bonner County Historical Society and Museum. Community members interested in volunteering or learning more about the historical society’s mission can contact the organization directly.
