Bonner County Boat Crash Manslaughter Case Delayed for Mediation

A Bonner County criminal case stemming from a fatal September 2025 boat crash near Cottage Island has been pushed back to allow mediation between the parties, delaying what had been an August trial date.

Sean Caldon, 54, faces felony charges of involuntary manslaughter and operating a watercraft while under the influence following a late-night crash on Lake Pend Oreille. A pretrial conference that had been set for June 15, 2026, and a trial originally scheduled for August 10, 2026, were both continued to mid-November 2026 to give both sides time to pursue mediation.

Fatal Crash on Cottage Island

The incident began on the night of Saturday, September 20, 2025, when a 911 call came in at approximately 10:50 p.m. Caldon reported to officials that he had run his boat aground near Cottage Island. A passenger, Jose “Gomie” Gomez, was ejected from the vessel and could not be immediately located.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho State Police, Bonner County Emergency Services, Sam Owen Fire, and Sandpoint Fire. Sam Owen Fire arrived first and launched a search. Gomez was eventually found on land, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Criminal charges were formally filed against Caldon on October 14, 2025. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.

Case Timeline and Mediation

Caldon entered a not guilty plea to the felony charges at a March 2026 hearing, at which time he also waived his right to a speedy trial. That waiver helped clear the path for the current rescheduling, which pushes the pretrial conference to mid-November 2026 while the mediation process moves forward.

Mediation in criminal cases can serve various purposes, including resolving civil liability matters that often run parallel to criminal proceedings. The continuation does not affect the criminal charges themselves, which remain pending before the court.

The case has drawn attention across North Idaho given the involvement of multiple emergency response agencies and the loss of life on one of the region’s most-used waterways. Lake Pend Oreille and its surrounding areas see heavy recreational boat traffic throughout the summer months, and water-related incidents involving alcohol remain a consistent public safety concern for the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office and Idaho State Police marine patrols.

What Comes Next

With the pretrial conference now targeted for mid-November 2026, a new trial date has yet to be publicly set. The outcome of the mediation process could influence how the case ultimately proceeds. Caldon remains charged with two felonies, and the prosecution’s case is expected to rely heavily on the accounts of first responders and evidence gathered that night by multiple agencies. Residents following the case can expect additional court dates to be announced as the mediation period concludes.
