A free community event Thursday in Sandpoint will bring representatives from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs directly to veterans and their families, eliminating the need for a trip across the state line to access federal benefits and healthcare information.
The gathering takes place at the Sandpoint Veterans of Foreign Wars post on July 16. Staff from the Spokane VA administration facility will be on hand to help attendees navigate enrollment, disability claims, healthcare options, and other veteran services. The event is open to all veterans, family members, and community members interested in learning more about available resources.
Closing the Distance Gap
Bonner County is home to more than 4,300 veterans, many of whom live significant distances from the nearest VA facility. The Spokane VA office, which serves the region, sits 86 miles from Sandpoint—a considerable drive for those seeking in-person assistance or unfamiliar with the benefits application process.
Tom Lindley, Bonner County’s veteran service officer, emphasized the importance of making VA resources accessible locally. “The more people that we can bring into the fold of VA healthcare and VA disability benefits, the more veteran lives we can positively impact,” Lindley said. Lindley himself brings decades of military experience to the role, having served roughly 30 years in the Air Force.
John Stoddard, Jr., vice commander of Sandpoint VFW Post, stressed the value of face-to-face engagement between VA staff and the community. “There’s a human face behind the VA and not some evil entity that we all conjure up in our minds,” Stoddard said, highlighting how direct interaction can dispel misconceptions and build confidence in the system.
What Veterans Can Expect
The event provides an informal setting for veterans to ask questions, learn about eligibility requirements, and begin the application process for benefits they may have earned through military service. Topics likely to be addressed include healthcare enrollment, disability compensation, survivor benefits, and mental health resources.
For many veterans in rural Bonner County, the Thursday gathering represents a rare opportunity to access VA expertise without traveling to Spokane. The free format removes financial barriers and allows attendees to bring family members or others who can help navigate the sometimes-complex benefits system.
What Comes Next
The Sandpoint VFW post will host the event on Thursday, July 16. Veterans and community members interested in learning more about VA resources are encouraged to attend. Those seeking additional information beforehand can contact the Bonner County veteran service office or the Sandpoint VFW directly.
Future outreach efforts may follow, depending on the response to this week’s gathering and feedback from attendees. For Bonner County’s veteran population, access to timely information about federal benefits represents a meaningful step toward ensuring that service members receive the support they have earned.
