Sandpoint Paid Parking System Draws Organized Opposition From Local Business Advocates

Sawtooth Valley, Idaho

Sandpoint’s newly implemented paid parking system is facing swift and organized pushback from residents and business owners who fear the fees will harm downtown commerce and deter visitors from shopping locally.

The city rolled out the parking program just over a week ago, establishing a two-hour free window at downtown kiosks before charging $4 per hour. Local and county residents can purchase annual permits to avoid the charges entirely, but the system has become a flashpoint in the community.

Opposition Takes Organized Form

A group called Sandpoint Citizens Against Paid Parking has mobilized quickly, gathering roughly 220 members on Facebook and planning a formal protest. The group plans to demonstrate Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. outside City Hall and will begin collecting petition signatures later in the month. Some members have discussed pursuing a recall election against the mayor in addition to seeking repeal of the parking program.

The city has reported that online threats of violence toward public officials have been posted in connection with the parking debate. In response, the mayor issued a written statement calling for civil and respectful discussion as the community works through the disagreement.

City Cites Revenue Needs; Critics Worry About Business Impact

City officials have characterized the paid parking system as a revenue-generation measure for Sandpoint. However, opponents argue the fees will discourage shoppers and tourists from spending time and money downtown, ultimately harming the local businesses that depend on foot traffic.

Jeff Pattison, speaking on the issue, emphasized the importance of listening to residents and business owners. “I just think we have to listen to those that live here and are paying taxes to live here. They should be considered, and the business owners,” he said.

Christine Strom offered a different perspective, noting that the system may distribute costs fairly across visitor and resident classes. “It kinda makes sense to me, because I feel like the tourists need to be adding to the city and fees and all the things associated with having a tourist city,” she said.

What Comes Next

The protest scheduled for Wednesday will likely draw significant turnout given the grassroots momentum. The petition drive planned for later in July could put added pressure on city officials to reconsider or modify the program. Whether the city will move to adjust the fees, the free-parking window, or permit structure remains unclear.
