A 217-acre wildfire burning in Shoshone County has reached 75% containment, fire officials reported Saturday evening, as crews worked to hold the line against strong wind gusts that threatened to undo earlier progress.
The Gold Run fire, located between Elizabeth Park and Big Creek, has kept firefighters busy since it broke out near Kellogg. Despite the gusty conditions Saturday, containment lines held steady. First responders spent the day extinguishing hot spots and reinforcing the fire line, with mop-up and containment work scheduled to continue through Sunday.
Smoldering areas remained active as of midweek, underscoring the persistent nature of wildland fires even as the perimeter comes under control. Officials noted that crew and equipment resources will begin scaling back as containment improves.
The Gold Run fire comes amid a forecast of a severe 2026 wildfire season across Idaho, with dry conditions and early blazes raising concern among land managers statewide. Drought stress across the region has also put Idaho fish populations at risk, compounding the environmental pressure on North Idaho waterways and forests this summer.
No injuries or structure losses were immediately reported in connection with the Gold Run fire. Further updates are expected as crews complete mop-up operations in the coming days.
