Downtown Sandpoint is set to come alive with local art this Friday evening as the Pend Oreille Arts Council launches its 49th annual ArtWalk — one of the longest-running community arts traditions in North Idaho.
The opening reception runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 12, giving residents and visitors a chance to explore more than 25 participating locations scattered throughout the heart of Sandpoint. The event is free and open to all ages.
A City-Wide Showcase Spanning Downtown Streets
More than 100 local artists will have work on display at venues spread across First Avenue, Cedar Street, Oak Street, Main Street, and Second Avenue. The opening night format allows art lovers to walk from stop to stop, meeting the people behind the paintings, sculptures, and other works while enjoying the festive atmosphere unique to a warm June evening in Sandpoint.
POAC Arts Administrator Claire Lutz described the opening as a community celebration, saying, “Many locations will be hosting special receptions featuring artist demonstrations, live music, refreshments and opportunities to meet the artists.”
Lutz also extended an open invitation to the entire region, adding, “I want everyone to come celebrate Sandpoint’s favorite summer tradition.”
While Friday night serves as the formal launch, the exhibit itself is not a single-evening affair. All participating venues will keep artwork on display through August 31, meaning there are nearly three months for residents to take in the full breadth of what local artists have created.
POAC Gallery Serves as Central Hub
The Pend Oreille Arts Council’s own gallery, located at 313 N. Second Avenue in Sandpoint, anchors the event and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the summer run. The gallery serves as a central resource for ArtWalk maps, artist information, and details on individual venue receptions.
Those looking for more information about the event can reach POAC directly at 208-263-6139.
Now in its 49th year, ArtWalk has grown into one of Bonner County’s most recognizable warm-season events, drawing both longtime locals and tourists who time their visits to coincide with the annual showcase. The format — free, walkable, and built around genuine interaction between artists and the public — reflects the kind of community character that defines Sandpoint’s summer identity.
What Comes Next
After Friday’s opening night reception, ArtWalk transitions into a two-and-a-half-month city-wide exhibit. Visitors can return at their own pace to explore participating venues throughout June, July, and into late August. Individual locations may host their own follow-up events or artist demonstrations during that period, so checking with POAC or calling ahead to specific venues is encouraged for those hoping to catch particular artists.
The exhibit’s final day is August 31, leaving plenty of summer left to take in one of the Sandpoint area’s most beloved annual traditions. As the community continues to grow and draw new residents and visitors to the Lake Pend Oreille region, events like ArtWalk serve as a reminder of the deep creative culture that has long made North Idaho’s Panhandle distinctive.
For Bonner County families looking for community events this summer, ArtWalk joins a season already marked by local milestones — including the recent Class of 2026 graduation ceremonies across Bonner County schools and ongoing community programming throughout the region. More details on ArtWalk are available through POAC at their Second Avenue gallery or by phone.
