Shoshone County Man Faces Felony Charges After Fake Shooting Call, Kicking Deputy at Hospital

A Shoshone County man is facing multiple criminal charges after deputies say he fabricated a gunshot wound report, then kicked a law enforcement officer during a hospital visit following his arrest.

Douglas Vern Quigley was charged in First Judicial District Court with battery on a law enforcement officer, filing a false report of violence, and resisting or obstructing officers — stemming from an incident that unfolded the evening of May 30.

False Report Draws Emergency Response

Deputies were dispatched to a residence on French Gulch Road just before 7:30 p.m. after Quigley contacted dispatchers claiming he had been shot in the right hip by a neighbor. Upon arrival, law enforcement found no physical injuries consistent with a gunshot wound and no evidence that any shooting had taken place. Neighbors in the area told deputies they had not heard any gunfire.

As the investigation continued, Quigley acknowledged to officers that he had not, in fact, been shot — contradicting the account he had given to dispatchers. Officers also detected the odor of an intoxicating substance during their contact with him.

Arrest Complicated by Resistance, Hospital Incident

When deputies attempted to take Quigley into custody, he refused to comply with commands and tensed his arms against officers. He was subsequently transported to Shoshone Medical Center for a medical evaluation.

While being escorted through the hospital, Quigley kicked a deputy in the leg. After receiving medical clearance, he was taken to the Shoshone County Public Safety Building.

The battery on a law enforcement officer charge carries significant potential consequences under Idaho law. Under Idaho Code 18-915(3)(b), a conviction on that count alone could result in a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of as much as $50,000.

What Comes Next

Quigley’s case will proceed through the First Judicial District Court. The charges filed against him — battery on a law enforcement officer, false report of violence, and resisting or obstructing officers — reflect a pattern of conduct during a single incident that escalated from an emergency call through the point of arrest and beyond. No trial date or preliminary hearing information was immediately available.
