Schmit commits to College of Idaho

Sandpoint, Idaho — Sandpoint High School sprinter Isaac Schmit has committed to continue his track and field career at the College of Idaho, an NAIA program based in Caldwell, capping a standout four-year varsity career with one of the most decorated individual résumés in school history.

Schmit’s decision to stay in Idaho gives the Yotes a proven performer in the short sprints. He has posted a personal best of 10.79 seconds in the 100-meter dash — the second-fastest time ever recorded by a Sandpoint High athlete — and 22.18 seconds in the 200-meter dash, which ranks fourth all-time at the school.

Record-Breaking Career at Sandpoint High

Over four years of varsity competition, Schmit qualified for the state meet five times and claimed three district titles, adding four district runner-up finishes along the way. He collected 37 gold medals across individual events and relay competitions throughout his time with the Bulldogs.

This spring, Schmit was part of relay units that rewrote the Sandpoint record books. The 4×100 relay team posted a time of 41.82 seconds, while the 4×200 squad ran 1:27.35 — both performances breaking existing school records.

Beyond the high school circuit, Schmit trained with the Spokane Speed Academy and competed at the NIKE Indoor Nationals on two occasions, gaining experience against some of the top prep sprinters in the country.

What Comes Next

Schmit will join the College of Idaho’s track and field program, where the NAIA level provides a competitive environment for athletes who excelled on the prep circuit. His combination of individual speed and relay experience should translate well to the collegiate level.

Sandpoint’s strong showing in athletics this spring extended beyond the track. Sandpoint swimmers also put together an impressive performance at a recent Moscow Middle School Invitational, reflecting the depth of athletic development coming out of the Lake Pend Oreille region. Meanwhile, the school district has continued to invest in student achievement beyond sports, with Sandpoint High School students recently earning workforce readiness and CTE diplomas as part of broader educational programming.

Schmit was joined at his commitment ceremony by his parents, Cynthia and Dan Schmit, his brother Xavier, head track and field coach Doug Fry, assistant coach Tyler Haynes, and Sandpoint High Athletic Director TJ Clary.
