Midvale Elementary Teacher Retires After 40 Years, Leaves Lasting Impact on Students

A longtime educator at Midvale Elementary School is hanging up her teaching career after four decades of shaping young minds in rural Idaho. Varina Pickett, who began her teaching journey with a mission to make the world a better place, is retiring this year from the small school district that serves approximately 130 students.

Pickett’s path to education began far from Idaho’s farmland. She grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska, where her father worked as a statistics professor. During her formative years, she became heavily involved in 4-H, an experience she credits with molding her perspective on service and community impact.

From Alaska to Idaho Farm Country

According to Pickett, her time in 4-H instilled a philosophy that would guide her career choices. The youth development program taught her to look beyond personal desires and consider how she could contribute to improving the world around her. That sense of purpose led her to pursue a career in education.

Seeking warmer weather and the experience of all four seasons, Pickett left Alaska to attend the College of Idaho. There she met Alan Pickett, who would become her husband. After marriage, she followed him to Midvale, where he joined the family farming operation as the fourth generation to work the land.

A Career Dedicated to Young Learners

Pickett found her professional home at Midvale Elementary School, where she quickly discovered her calling working with elementary-age children. She appreciated the forgiving nature of younger students and their willingness to accept that teachers are human and capable of mistakes.

Her impact on the small school community has been measurable in a particularly meaningful way. Two teachers currently working at Midvale Elementary were once her students, creating a legacy that extends beyond lesson plans and classroom management. These former pupils chose to follow in their teacher’s footsteps, returning to the same school where Pickett once guided their education.

What Comes Next

As Pickett steps away from daily classroom duties, the Midvale school district will need to fill the void left by an educator who spent her entire career serving one community. For rural Idaho schools like Midvale Elementary, retaining experienced teachers and attracting new educators remains an ongoing challenge. The district serves a relatively small student population, making each teacher’s contribution particularly significant to maintaining educational quality in the region.

Pickett’s retirement marks the end of an era for students and families in Midvale who have known her as a constant presence in their local school. Her decision to dedicate 40 years to one community reflects the kind of long-term commitment that small-town schools depend on to maintain stability and institutional knowledge.
