Clark Fork Wampus Cats Target 8-Man Football Title Under Veteran Coach Andre Johansen

The Clark Fork High School football program is undergoing a significant transformation heading into the 2026 fall season. Under the direction of new head coach Andre Johansen, the Wampus Cats are shifting from a rebuilding year to a championship pursuit in the Idaho High School Activities Association (IHSAA) 1A division.

Johansen, a veteran educator and coach with two decades of experience on the West Coast, arrived in Bonner County this spring. He brings a wealth of knowledge from his tenure in Northern California, where he spent many years at Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento. However, the move to North Idaho presents a unique challenge: Johansen is coaching 8-man football for the first time in his career.

New Leadership and Roster Growth

The transition has been marked by immediate physical preparation and roster expansion. The program began implementing pre-practice weight room sessions in April, aiming to build strength and conditioning before the traditional summer camp period. Early results of this disciplined approach are visible on the roster, which has grown by 10 players since the end of the previous campaign.

Last season proved difficult for Clark Fork, as the team finished with a 2-6 record. The coaching staff is using that performance as a baseline, focusing on consistency and physicality to improve upon those numbers. Johansen’s background includes extensive head coaching experience, totaling 25 years in various high school athletic programs. His task now is to translate that success to the smaller gridiron format used in Idaho’s lower classifications.

The younger athletes have responded well to the new regime. Johansen noted that the underclassmen embraced the culture changes immediately. “The younger kids, they bought right in… I don’t have to worry about those guys,” Johansen told the Bonner County Daily Bee regarding the team’s discipline and effort levels during early workouts.

Key Returners Anchor the Squad

Despite the roster turnover inherent in high school sports, Clark Fork retains several key contributors from last year. Mateo Cruz returns as a dual-threat player, lining up at quarterback on offense and defensive end on defense. In 2025, Cruz led the Wampus Cats in rushing yards, tackles per game, and total touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the most productive players in the conference.

Peyton Chapman also returns to the lineup, contributing at wide receiver and defensive back. His experience on both sides of the ball provides valuable depth for a team that relies on player versatility due to the 8-man format.

The roster also includes notable transfers returning to their home communities. Charlie Becker, a state-qualified wrestler, has moved back to Clark Fork from Portland. His addition brings elite-level wrestling credentials to the football field, likely bolstering the line play where leverage and strength are critical.

Junior Jason Mayora is another pivotal figure, expected to anchor the interior as a tight end and defensive lineman. Johansen has emphasized the importance of weight and mass in the trenches, citing examples of linemen pushing 150 pounds as the team works to maximize physical advantages against league opponents.

A Unique League Structure

The competitive landscape for Clark Fork this year is distinct due to the composition of the 1A North Star League. Coeur du Christ Academy stands as the only other member of the conference. This creates a straightforward path to the state championship: winning the league typically means securing a spot in the title game.

The season will open on August 29 with a matchup against Coeur du Christ, setting the tone for the rest of the fall. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on October 23, a contest Johansen has identified as decisive. A victory in that late-season clash would likely secure the state title for Clark Fork.

Given this structure, the margin for error is slim. Every game against non-league opponents serves as preparation for these two critical meetings. Johansen has set clear expectations for his players regarding performance standards.

“I’m going to judge success as if we’re competitive for four quarters in all those games,” Johansen told the Bonner County Daily Bee, outlining his criteria for evaluating the team’s progress throughout the season.

Family Ties and Community Impact

The arrival of Andre Johansen also marks a significant moment for local wrestling fans. His wife, Valerie Johansen, is already a prominent figure in North Idaho athletics. She currently leads the Sandpoint High School girls wrestling team and was named the Idaho Girls Head Coach of the Year in 2025.

The couple’s combined expertise in combat sports and weight room conditioning suggests a holistic approach to athlete development at Clark Fork. Their presence strengthens the athletic community in Bonner County, drawing connections between football, wrestling, and overall student-athlete welfare.

As the season approaches, the focus remains on execution. The Wampus Cats have addressed the roster gaps and established a training culture. Now, the work shifts from the weight room to the field, where Johansen’s coaching acumen will be tested against familiar rivals.

What Comes Next

The Clark Fork football season begins in earnest with the August 29 opener against Coeur du Christ. Fans should monitor early-season performances against non-league opponents to gauge the team’s readiness for the October 23 title showdown.
