The Sandpoint Sharks Swim Club hosted its Shark Attack Open Water Swim last Friday at City Beach, welcoming more than 60 participants ranging from first-time open water swimmers to seasoned competitors. The event served as a warm-up for many athletes preparing for the larger Long Bridge Swim, which took place the following day.
All swimmers who entered the water successfully completed the course, according to organizers. The diverse field reflected the club’s mission to engage swimmers at various skill levels in open water competition.
Success Across All Experience Levels
Emily Renzini, head coach of the Sandpoint Sharks, highlighted the collaborative spirit that defined the event. “We couldn’t have asked for a better day for the Shark Attack Open Water Swim. It was incredible to see swimmers of all ages step outside their comfort zones, encourage one another and cross the finish line with huge smiles,” Renzini told the Bonner County Daily Bee.
The event’s structure encouraged participation from swimmers making their first foray into open water competition as well as veterans of distance swimming. Organizers credited the positive atmosphere and supportive environment as key factors in the high completion rate.
Recognition for Organizers
Meggie and Foust received special recognition for their planning and leadership in bringing the event to fruition. The pair’s coordination of logistics, safety protocols, and athlete management enabled the smooth execution of the swim.
The Shark Attack Open Water Swim has become an important stepping stone for local swimmers preparing for larger regional competitions. Its placement the day before the Long Bridge Swim — one of the region’s flagship open water events — allows participants to acclimate to open water conditions and gain confidence before the larger challenge.
